China outranks UK in academic research output
The UK slips to rank three in academic research ranking as China overtakes it as the second largest producer of academic research in the world, Zoe Corbyn of the Times Higher reports this week. While the UK published 91,273 papers in 2008, this relatively high output could not keep pace with over 110,000 papers published by China in the same year. This represents an increase for China of approximately 30,000 compared to the previous year. The United States remains in first place position with the overall largest research output worldwide. These figures, compiled by data analyst Evidence, relate, however, solely to the actual volume of output and do not reflect the UK’s share of world citations, which increased from an average of 11.2% over the past five years to 11.8% in 2008. This places the UK in second position for citations, behind the US. More on this story on http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/story.asp?sectioncode=26&storycode=408525&c=2
